When you are looking for something unique to do indoors look no further than Chicago’s Best library & map room the Newberry Library. It is a gem for so many reasons but the map room is a sparkling diamond.
The heart and soul of The Newberry is a set of collections that appeals to a variety of readers and sets a course of inspiration for public programs and academic endeavors. At any time at the library you will find amazing historical and topical exhibitions, programs, and learning experiences. Currently you can find such programs as: Hamilton: The History Behind the Musical; Photographing Freetowns, photographs of African American freetowns in depression-era Kentucky; and Joseph Joachim and Beethoven – A Lecture Recital. These are just a few of the current programs.
You can peruse the regular exhibitions on the website but we’d like to feature two of our favorite things about The Newberry Library. As mentioned in our title, we believe there is no better map room than the Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography. Besides being a breathtaking display, it is a center for cartography research. The center promotes the use of the Newberry’s cartographic collections, plays host to the monthly meetings of the Chicago Map Society as well as summer institutes and research fellowships. No need to forgo fascination in Chicago on a rainy or cold day. Just let the maps and your imagination take you on wild, exotic journeys!
Are you someone who still loves to have someone read to you? You and your family will love The Shakespeare Project held at The Newberry in Ruggles Hall. This is free to the public and there is no reservation required. This is a staged reading of selected works of Shakespeare directed by Steve Scott of The Goodman Theater. Fifteen minutes of informative talk pre-show followed by a Q & A with the performers post-show make this a wonderful experience for all lovers of literature.
